 Pandit W. D.  Amaradeva


Vannakuwatta Vaduge Don Albert Perera is one of the greatest singers of Sri Lanka. He was popularly known as W.D. Amaradeva. He nurtured the art of Sinhala song from North Indian Classical music.



He was born on 05 December 1972 in Moratuwa Koralawella. He was the youngest of six children in the family. He got musical inspiration from his father. His father made him a violin out of wood and he excelled with it.

He studied at Sri Dharmadaya Vidyalaya, Panadura Sri Sumangala Vidyalaya, Kalutara Vidyalaya and Balapitiya Siddhartha Vidyalaya. He studied at Bhatkhande Music college  in Lucknow.

The name 'Amaradeva' was given by Professor Ediriweera Sarachchandra. He also studied Sinhala folk music. He made efforts to create a true musical culture unique to Sinhala music.

He also contributed to the creation of songs by artists like Victor Ratnayake, Sanath Nandasiri, Sunil Edirisinghe, T.M. Jayaratne.

Pandit Amaradevan also received many awards which can be listed as below.

  •  Philippines Ramon Magsaysay Award. (2001)
  • Indian Padma Shri Award. (2002)
  • Sri Lanka Kala Keerthi Award. (1986)
  •  Sri Lanka Deshamanya Award. (1998)



He is not only a singer but also a music director. He also created the national anthem of Maldives.

He married Mrs. Wimala and they have 3 children. 



He passed away on November 03, 2016 due to a sudden illness๐Ÿ˜ž.
